Yesterday Academedia was visited by one of my personal favourites all time and the author of the book “Ten thoughts about time”; Bodil Jönsson!
Bodil is working as a professor at Certec at the University of Lund. Her lecture was called “You and your time, others and their time”. For one hour she talked about time, teenagers, new technology and what AFK means. She talked a lot of the meaning of things, reflections is how I perceived it. She also asked all of us how much we really got done every day. Bodil is quit happy to leave her mobile phone at home or at work. She stated she wants concentration and that means that availability is its contrast. It is a choice; you can’t be both at the same time!
I could go on and on about her work, about her books and foremost about her thoughts. I personally use the phrase from her book “Ten thoughts about time” in my voluntary work; “Time are all you have” when talking to parents in order to inspire them to help out in Högaborgs Bollklubb where I am on the youth board. I made a decision after reading one of her books a long time ago, what ever I choose to do with my time to make sure to have my heart in it and to accept that the consequences from it!
For more information about her thoughts, read her books! She has also written a book with Håkan Jönsson called “Ten thoughts about food”. A new book is coming this fall called “Ten years later.” I will be first in line!
Bodil – I will value your lecture for the rest of my life and thank you for giving me a chance to do this with my auntie Kerstin! And a great thanks for all the books for me and my students!
Donna
Bye the way, Bodil taught me that AFK means away from keyboard J

I have a confession to make! Sometimes when I look at my soon to be 16 year old son and his friends I feel very old…..what goes on in his brain? What makes him tick?
Let’s break it down; he wears only sport clothes (even on Christmas Eve!) I couldn’t even bribe him with cash in to wear a nice shirt! He could care less about the mobile phone but the mp3-player is important. He wants a new bike because the old one was stolen and by new I mean an old woman’s bike, preferably with a bicycle basket! Music is on all the time and he spends all his money on experiences; movies, going out to eat and so on. He would rather be caught dead than wear an ear ring, sun glasses is as far as he would go. Cuts his hair every other month but then again it wouldn’t matter to him if he missed a couple of months. Material things really doesn’t matter unless someone else is buying J He is a “typical” WoW player and plays tournaments every month which means ALL NIGHT!
What target group does he belong to? What are the key factors for decision making purchasing? Friends are one of the most important I believe! Image or whatever you call it controls his age group. I say control because sometimes I feel it is all about what others have and do and wear and not what he wants. The perception of others is very important for SOME young people.
But is the adult generation so much different? NO! We might want to say we are different and make decisions based on free will but I don’t think that is true. It is just different angles of the same factor.
Because when it comes down to it, we are all the same! We have the same problems, same feelings and more or less want the same things in life!
So think about it the next time you see a group of teenagers, they will be your next target group if they are not already!
There is a lot of talk about how to be a great employee but how about turning the table; what makes you a great employer? What will make me choose your company and not someone else? What gives your company the edge? What is your strength?
I think it is very important that the company I work at has something that gives me added value. Salary is not everything, although it is important. What else will make me go out of bed at 7 AM on a Sunday to focus on my assignments?
Strong leadership, challenges, inspiration, great co-workers and forward planning are KEY words when I choose my employer! Like a job application has specification of requirements I have one for the employer! Besides that there are key words when it comes to the corporate culture; trust, energy and focus.
The relationship between the employer and employee needs be under constant development. Today people don’t work at the same company during their whole life. The life cycle is 4 – 6 yrs I believe and it requires a lot from both. Also the company needs to market their value in order to attract the people they really want.
So why did I choose Academedia?
I graduated 2002 from Academedia; project management within Information and Media technology. Coming back and making a difference was a great challenge for me! The possibilities with increasing the brand value are another but I think the most valuable factor was the students! I look at the students in Creative Marketing and I am amazed on a daily basis. They give me so much in terms of making me really want to cross every border; there is nothing impossible, it just take longer! They keep me on my toes and on a constant outlook for more, greater and bigger!
According to my son I have several! I say no too often and apparently I am the geekiest mother on earth! Well I can live that, NO PROBLEM! He will survive J
My problem is of another kind, I have problems with people not taking responsibility, not owning their lives, problems and issues. Instead they dump them on others and make excuses for example why they haven’t done something or why they are where they are in life.
Very often I hear people complaining about their jobs and salaries, family and weight is another popular topic but I very rarely hear what their part is in all of it. This can be family members, friends, students, co-workers, someone on the train etc…..
I think I am more frustrated than anything else! Because whatever the reason is behind it, what does it do for them on a constant basis establish facts over and over again without ever coming to a conclusion? Where do their words take them? Forward? Ahead? Does it change their lives and make it better? If you do the same thing over and over why do you get surprised with the same result?
I have a Buddhist life philosophy and the journey is the overall goal in life…..if I make a personal evaluation of my points of views aren’t I judging others? What is the core of my perception in this matter? Can it be that I am really saying my way is the best and correct way and all others are false and inaccurate? They should all just wake up and smell the coffee?
Everyone has their own way in life; the process doesn’t look the same for all of us. The main focus for me is me! Not what other people say and do, I can’t ever change their way but I can ALWAYS change my one. Aren’t we all the same? Just trying to live our lives and do the very best we can?
Patience and focus are my challenges, what are yours?
I find myself saying about different things that I REALLY want it; quit smoking, loose weight, getting a six-pack abs and so on…….nothing of this comes true, well at least not yet anyway. I might not be ready but I think I don’t want it enough! I have a thousand excuses, not enough time and to much to do. I might want it but I am not really that passionate about it, not prepared to do the work.
I have met a person who is not only dedicated to what she wants but she has taught me the value of passion, Ann. She is currently going a 12 day course with my colleague Anders Printz and learning how to make films and moving media. The thing is she is almost blind; 0,3 % eyesight on one eye and even less on the other. I had the pleasure to meet Ann over lunch and her story is such an inspiration.
Ann uses a very big screen and wears eye glasses that would give me head ache. She is very focused on what she is doing and she loves every minute of it, in fact she wants to take more courses after this one, she is not done yet. She is very passionate! About life, philosophy and her family. Ann loves salsa dancing with her husband and she is working with Hassela Helpline for young people who run the risk of getting involved with drugs and crime.
So how passionate are you about the things you want in life? What holds you back? What excuses do you use? How can you identify decision making factors on a personal level in order to get ahead?

Robin Stearns wanted to help her husband Mike. He had since he graduated in finance not been able to find work. So when she received her tax return she bought a computer and started a website; www.myhusbandneedsajob.com
When times get tough one need to find other ways and Robin & Mike have clearly find theirs. They where interviewed by CNN and their action has been in the news all over the world. Mike has been contacted by several companies with job offers!
What I find so interesting and rewarding is that they didn’t give up; they found their angle and ran with it. They made it happen, with very little resources. Because Robin made the marketing one on one – my husband needs a job! Simple, honest and concrete!
So what do you take from Robin & Mikes story? What can you do if you are looking for work? What is your angle and how can you express that?
Just because it hasn’t been done before doesn’t mean it can be done…
Today’s newspapers and websites are overflowing with advice for job hunters – tips & tricks in order to give you the edge. Do this, avoid that, blog and micro blog and don’t forget that you must attend all events coming your way in order to really expand your network or you are OUT!
Education will always be a good asset but it is not enough by itself, work experience is great but doesn’t give you your dream job alone and social skills are even better but one can not survive solo on that….so what are the magic words? What will take you all the way? What will give you YOUR dream job?
From Creative Marketing at Academedia there will be graduating 25 students this summer and what can they expect and what will be their job future? What will be my advice as the program responsible? If I could go back to 2002, the year I graduated, what would be my advice to me?
Do it yourself. Don’t wait on people to give you quick and easy answers. Don’t hesitate, act on it. Want it? Do it! Be careful of people trying to hold you down with words and actions, don’t waist energy on negative people, focus and make plans and keep deadlines. Learn from others, be social in your own way, stay true to yourself and always keep an eye on your goal but what ever you do; don’t forget to keep on learning!
YOU CAN DO IT!
The journey is the goal I have heard, what would I be without my mistakes? Dont be afraid of making them, they are a sure thing that you are doing something!
